Another Epic Ride

A handful of GenX ruggers and one wife took to the trails of Germantown yesterday in the annual MoCo Epic. We rode the 20-mile course in our team shirts; this year’s jersey was an Under Armour baby blue with the embroidery “Towson State Old Boys Est. 1995” and “Magical Thinking Edition”. Captain Tim explained this year’s theme meant wishful thinking which results in self-deception. Some deep thoughts for a tough ride!

After about 12 miles of riding, the Halloween theme rest stop with beverages and diverse selection of eats was a welcome break. Much leg stretching and grilled sausage prepared me for the second half.

For some reason, this year on the trails l felt every root and every rock… and determined my 20 year old Trek was not doing me any favors. Even though it is in excellent working order with the recent addition of a new chain, new back sprocket set, new cables and new pedals, it is now time to start shopping for a modern bike with a lot of shock absorption. My old bike is perfect for pavement and gravel, but any more intense trail riding requires a new rig. At least, that’s what my hind end, legs and shoulders were telling me.
