The Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal Tao;
the nameless is the source of all things,
and the named is the mother of the myriad manifestations.
Chapter 1 of the Tao Te Ching introduces the fundamental concept of the Tao (the Way), emphasizing that the ultimate reality cannot be fully captured by words or names. Lao Tzu begins by stating that “The Tao that can be walked is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name”. This highlights the ineffable nature of the Tao, which exists beyond human perception and linguistic description.
